The Peace of Wild Thingsby Wendell Berry
When despair for the world grows in meand I wake in the night at the least soundin fear of what my life and my children’s lives may be,I go and lie down where the wood drakerests in his beauty on the water, and the great heron feeds.I come into the peace of wild thingswho do not tax their lives with forethoughtof grief. I come into the presence of still water. And I feel above me the day-blind starswaiting with their light. For a timeI rest in the grace of the world, and am free.
Susan Ivanova:Have you ever heard of the hour of the wolf?
Lyta Alexander:No.
Susan Ivanova:My father told me about it. It’s the time between 3:00 and 4:00 in the morning. You can’t sleep, and all you can see is the troubles and the problems and the ways that your life should’ve gone but didn’t. All you can hear is the sound of your own heart. I’ve been living in the hour of the wolf for seven days, Lyta. Seven days. The wolf and I are now on a first-name basis. In times like this, my father used to take one large glass of vodka before bed. ‘To keep the wolf away,’ he said. And then he would take three very small drinks of vodka, just in case she had cubs while she was waiting outside. [she takes a drink] It doesn’t work.

And when you retire all those worries go away. The only thing you have to worry about is: When will the grim reaper show up?

And a special fear, just for Pam: Bra finally gives up and commits suicide in despair.

I believe Calvin once said the night is dark so you can focus on your fears.

If you’re Black of course, you might find instead your local PD coming by to sprinkle your bedroom with bullets.

When you’re much older, getting to sleep isn’t the problem: getting up is.

I have never heard of “sand” helping you sleep. Metallica certainly doesn’t think so.
