You only need a wife or husband in life, to help you get through it, nurturing and loving each other. After you die, and you lived a good life, you will be in heaven and have no needs or you will wait for your loved one and spend eternity together, assuming they lived a good life also. The idea is that you help each other get there. The ‘until death’ part refers to this life, not your reward.

No heaven. No hell. Nothing. Thus, “’til death do us part.” But seriously I think the saying in the vows refers to allowing re-marriage if one dies.

“Two souls become one”, what a scary thought. Reminds me of the Twilight Zone episode “the Chaser”.

Mark 12:18-27 provides one view. No, I am not a Bible freak, this was the gospel for Roman Catholic Mass on 6/2.
