Sad to see social anxiety so severe that it could derail her career. Pretty tough for someone like that to feel at ease with thousands of eyes focused on her, let along having to face the media after a match.
Tennis is NOT a biathlon event with “interviewing” as the second part. If interviewing causes her to play worse tennis, then she would be WRONG to do the interviews. If some other player likes interviews, that’s okay, too. Less okay if that other player is using the interviews and big soapbox to play head games with the other players or even the officials.
I can see where she is coming from. How many sports “reporters” are asking the most inane totally stupid questions? Far too many. I can see it when football players, college or pro are interviewed Its no wonder the players simply reply with platitudes
While I agree that many of the questions that come are really stupid, and that the credentialing process is poor, she gave the French Open and WTA no room to move. She pronounced, attacked and when quiet saying ‘i don’t care about the rules and refused to talk to you about it’. Try that at your work.
A better route would be to allow a cooling off/unwind period THEN have meet the press time.(People are cutting the cord and live post game stuff is becoming a non factor anyway.)
It’s absurd to think she would withdraw from a major because she’s spoiled or selfish. And it’s sad more people don’t understand how serious anxiety disorders like hers are. Good for her for establishing proper priorities.
All the excuses change nothing about her signing a contract to do the interviews. If you can’t fulfill a contract don’t take the job. This is how the real world works. SMH

…not to mention the tournament officials who made it more important for players to perform at the press conferences than on the court.

How many times can you answer the same question, even if it’s posed differently, without becoming bored?
