In this comic strip, I’ve never seen Opal fold a fitted sheet. Maybe she hands those to Earl because she doesn’t know how. My system is to take it off the bed, wash it, and put it back on the bed without ever folding it. I fold occasionally because I have spare sheets.
First you pick it up by one top and the adjacent bottom corner. You tuck one into the other and stretch it on the bed with the corner toward one end of the bed and the fold toward the other. Pick up the part dangling near your knees and lift it, making a fold about 8 inches from the edge, then bring it back with a fold over the edge itself, then back… and maybe once more. Now pick up the right end and the left end and fold them toward each other until they nearly touch. One more fold, using the gap between as the location.
Take the result to the garage and place it on a clean 2×12 about a 15 inches long. Place it a couple of feet behind the car’s rear wheel. Lay a 4 foot 2×12 on top, nearly touching the tire. Back the car up until the full weight is on the sheet. Come back at least an hour later, move the car, bring the now firmly folded sheet inside and put it with the top sheet and pillow cases in the linen closet.
I decided to forget about fitted sheets, because the dryers in the laundry room in this ‘senior residence’ twist them so badly that anything else in the dryer gets caught in them and won’t dry. I just buy another flat sheet to use as a bottom sheet…
There are you tube videos that teach you exactly how to fold a fitted sheet so you can’t tell the difference between a fitted sheet and a flat sheet when they’re side by side. It really works.
Earl should save the fitted sheet for last. Maybe Opal will just want to put it right back on the bed. Or Earl can hope that Opal shows up and does it herself. Or Earl needs to know (or find out) what kind of folding (scrunching) is acceptable.
I am now following a thing I saw somewhere on the internet—just roll it into a ball (scruntch) to heck with the folding. It’s a mess but much easier- – not so good for a anal person though. Life is too short to stop everything to fold a darn fitted sheet!
In my youth, when I was between music gigs, I would sometimes work in my landlady’s commercial laundry; one of her accounts was the bedding for a hotel. She taught me how to fold a fitted sheet – by myself – so you couldn’t tell it from a flat sheet without unfolding.
And I forgot how about 40 years ago……
I try, but it always ends up like Earl’s. And you what? Not only does stretching it over the mattress take any & all wrinkles right out, but there only 2 people who would see them if it didn’t, so why worry? (On the Other hand, it took some years to convince Her that was OK, as Her mother always ironed the sheets* – T-shirts, jeans, handkerchiefs, underwear………..)
*Yes, the hotel sheets got run through a mangle – which, if you’ve never operated one (especially a commercial-sized one), I can assure you is a scary proposition).
It is humanly impossible to fold a fitted sheet – so when my husband does it, I tell him he must be part demon as fitted sheets came from down below. (Not to be confused with down under)!
Why on earth do people fold fitted sheets, or obsess with folding them???Just ball it up, put it in a pillow case with the other sheet and pillow case and put it in the cupboard?Simple!

I was ready to abandon fitted sheets and just use a flat sheet when they started coming with tags to identify the head and foot. Oh, what a relief!

With fitted sheets, you might just as well just roll them up into a ball. They don’t fold well.

Yeah, it’s impossible to fold a fitted sheet. I watched Martha Stewart do it once, but I still can’t do it.

Absolutely futile for a white male to even attempt folding a fitted sheet.

It takes less than a minute.
I figured out how to do this all on my own decades ago.
But it’s pretty easy watching this video.

I do the first step with the second two corners, then put all four together. Easy Peasy.
Still rather lumpy with my flannel sheets, but not as lumpy as all scrunched up, and my space is very limited.
