I had a dog which needed daily medication for a liver problem. She refused to take it. Over time she learned to hold the pill in her mouth for minutes and we’d find them around the house. Tried lots of other methods, but she’d find away around them. She wouldn’t listen to us when we told her it was to keep her healthy.

We had a Boxer, Molly who would do that. We kids would put her medicine in a ball of cheese, she would chomp on it, and a second later spit out the pill. We tried Hot Dogs, she’d eat around it.

I tried sausage (stronger flavor) and the same thing.

My dad watched this very amused. Walked over, grabbed Molly by the snout, opened her mouth, threw the pill back, and then clamped her mouth shut until she swallowed. He traced her throat with his finger of his free hand. When she swallowed the pill, he gave her some water and told us not to try and trick her, just give it to her.

With my cats, I found out that most meds came in a liquid form with a syringe that squirted the med in the mouth. I didn’t need to worry about bites or scratches & they couldn’t really spit it out. Worked so much better than when I tried to get a pill in the mouth & find it on the floor later. Don’t know if it available for dogs.

It’s not like he can threaten a dog with a suppository like I did with my child when she was young. Once she asked me what it was, she decided to take her medicine orally. I started it early, having the child swallow chewable child vitamins. So if she missed, she didn’t get an awful taste. It’s hard to teach a sick child to swallow a pill. Best to start when it can be kind of a game.
