Continuing my thoughts from yesterday, this arc does not portray a Luanne that I would feel comfortable around. As such, it makes me curious where Karen is taking us.
I have to hand it to Bernice: good job in panel 2 by simply thanking Nancy for the free room and board. I like how Nancy is so old school in that it looks like she has her checkbook out. Nancy know her daughter so well on top of everything, that small smile in panel 3 shows that this is par for the course in casa DeGroot with Luann. Over in Luann again, they just started high school and Luann went to Nancy and asked for over $2K for mall shopping, she has not changed that much in the ensuing 28 years. However, now I think it would be a good idea if you keeps those commodes nice and shiny Lu and keep up that dusting, in the grand scheme of things it is not a lot to ask in exchange for room and board as well as community college tuition and books (which are not cheap at all, schools are always using updated editions even if only a few pages are changed to make the students buy new books as opposed to hitting the used book market or simply borrowing the book from someone who took the course a couple of years back).
Yesterday, I speculated that perhaps Tiffany wasn’t the only one who lost her job at Kids First. While I was taken to task about how long ago that may or may not have been, one thing is for sure: Tiffany at Kids First was the last time we saw Kids First.
And with today’s joke about wanting to be paid for household chores just brings the question to the forefront: Is Luann unemployed, as well as Bernice?
Or, as Mordy often likes to put it, are we suffering more amnesia and Karen has forgotten that Luann was ever employed?
No Luann. Bernice can’t see what she has done. Nancy, on the other hand, can perfectly understands what you say and finds your reaction really funny. Nancy loves Luann and her way of behave. She would never wish to change her with anyone or want to make her different ♡♡♡.
I can’t believe Nancy actually just offered Bernice money. Thanks for secretly doing something nice for me, which I never asked you to do in the first place! Have whatever amount of money you want! Wow…Frank would have a heart attack!
Again comments based on Luann based on personal perceptions of her character, rather than what the story has described her, abound. I’m going to wait until the Saturday to find out what she really is going to say. I have a number of clueless clues at the moment.
Told ya. It was never about ME Bernice. SEE what I can do! I am BETTER than you! Those ridiculous ideas and perceptions. As I’ve said, it is about doing something nice FOR Nancy. That’s all to it. Now Luann is wailing because it means she owes her mom because she lives there for free too. Hey, Luann. Bernice is not Nancy’s daughter and the idea is she was supposed to pay rent but is not. So she wanted to return the favor. YOU are family. Most families don’t charge their kids rent. Breathe, Luann. However, you DO need to GROW UP. Your attitude right now is not admirable or cute. And Nancy? Maybe you need to switch gears with Luann and treat her like an adult. Have adult conversations with her and set up expectations from her and a timeline? Encourage her to accept adult responsibilities such as housekeeping and laundry. Perhaps mow the grass. Take care of the garbage. Without prompts.
This is the second time that Bernice has caused Luann to regret the current living arrangement by performing tasks for Nancy and Frank. The sibling dynamic Luann had with Brad is very different from the pseudo sibling dynamic we’ve seen so far. Then it was slap stick comedy. Now it’s tending toward suspicion and jealousy. Where is the BFF togetherness that we could have suspected at the start? We haven’t seen any of the “two BFFs against the world” arcs to date. It’s been all “(Mom/Dad/Jack/Nil/Tara) liked you best” arcs so far.
So happy to have this end. Bernice has ingratiated herself to Nancy very effectively while Luann has been taken down a notch (again) and remained lazy and slovenly. It’s amazing how fast the writers had everyone (especially Bernice) forget that it was Luann’s idea to help her mom. Not to earn money – just to help her mom. Unfortunately, that generous attitude seems to have no permanent home in her little brain. Bernice, on the other hand, has once again managed to one up Luann and progressed her goal of becoming Nancy’s favorite daughter. Her ingratiating attitude is disgusting and it’s really sad that Nancy falls for it. It’s always amazing to me how they don’t have characters retaining their basic personality traits. At least Luann is consistently lazy and un-motivated. Bernice goes from snide, aggressive, snarling paranoid to angel girl like a light being switched on and off. This mother/daughter competition they have created between a daughter and a visitor is annoying. Bernice should disappear for awhile. Maybe she could work on her relationship with her real mother. I think everyone is tired of every arc being about her lately. I know I am, big time.
Here’s a question for you parents & everyone: At what age do you cut off your child’s allowance?Once they have graduated from H.S….College? Or do you continue paying them an allowance until, they leave home to live elsewhere and support themselves?
Bernice has forgotten when she went to Luann in hysterics about being homeless and Luann asked her parents to let her live there. She has certainly proven to be clever enough to transfer her “gratitude” over to Nancy, the homeowner. I wonder when Luann will realize how much she is being used by this person who is in no way a friend anymore. Bernice has made herself into a rival with her ingratiating antics.
(1) When Bernice first started to do the organize of Nancy Files Luann try to stop her.(2) Then when Nancy loved it and thought that Luann did it. It Took Luann a couple of days to tell Nancy that was actually Bernice that did it. (3) When Nancy asked Bernice why she just told her look better organize. (4) When Nancy started talking Bernice you saw Luann dying to be notice.
So, it is possible I’m reading WAY more into this, but is it possible Luann feels like she has to compete with Bernice because Lu’s parents seem to dote on B and take their daughter for granted? Before all the hate gets thrown…when I was a kid, I had a best friend who spent a LOT of time over at my house. My grandparents always said to me “Why can’t you be like so-and-so…she’s always so polite and she never gets into any trouble.” All of this was true of course. She was always a great kid and never did anything wrong. But it built up some resentment. I was never angry with her for it. But I WAS angry with my grandparents. Still am. It’s obviously more complicated than just this story being told here. It hurts to be compared to others when it’s coming from those who are supposed to love you unconditionally.
My Dad explained to me the value of food and lodging, it was whatever he decided it was worth. I was grateful I learned that before I entered the real world.

She’ll never accused of being grouped among the “entitled.” ;-)
