I had two cats who grew up together and played “ambush” all the time. One of them was a brilliant cat who learned how to use the technique for other purposes. If, when were out walking in the woods, he wanted to get home in a hurry, he would repeatedly ambush the other cat and arrange to get chased in the direction of home. The first time might have been a fluke but I saw him do it on numerous occasions when a light rain began to fall.
