He’s one of the lucky ones. I tried doing the same thing, but got a degree in a “hard science” and could never find any work outside that field no matter how qualified. It took going back for a different (and more relevant) degree before I could land the jobs I wanted to get.
Education is a lifelong adventure. The college degree or other certification of knowledge is just the starting point. The most important thing to learn in school is how to learn more and apply what you know to real life problems.
1. getting a degree shows that you can do something that takes a long time and is difficult. Pretty much all employers are willing to train someone who has shown that. 2. I once had a job in which I had several assistants. The degreed folks were better, no matter the subject of the degree.3. My degree was in classical Greek. It never held me back.

A college degree is an indication of your trainability. Most jobs have to be taught.
