Looking at Cat #1’s hind leg, I think he just came from the litter box (I hope). Cat #3 looks like he’s working on producing a furball. I’d think that would merit a sound all its own.
The secret is that they make it up as they go along. If you pay attention, you can become a cat whisperer like myself and communicate with each cat in it’s own way, which is often non-verbal. It’s not easy, takes a lot of patience, and they won’t always respond, but it can be very rewarding – especially for the cat. :)
When I walked Johnny Depp in the redwoods, he would go to the other side of a small pond to explore. After fifteen minutes, I would suggest we follow Kirby who had moved on. Johnny Depp would respond with a special meow that suggested I should go around the lake and come see the interesting stuff he found. Sometimes I would wait him out. Other times I would go see. He really did have a knack for finding interesting stuff.
Another time we were walking along a private road in the redwoods, when we came upon a barking dog. The cats disappeared into the brush. A woman came out and took control of the dog. She asked me what I was doing.
I told her I was just out walking my cats. Well, she gave me such a look that I had to call out, “Johnny Depp!”.

we adopted our agouti because we thought she was saying “Murnau” our favorite German expressionist film director.

“Meowww!”
“OK, then.” she said and led the dog back inside.
