I knew the America govt did this with Japanese Americans, but was unaware that they targeted Canadian Japanese too!

There’s no excuse for how these loyal citizens of America and Canada were treated but against the hysteria of the time the Hiihau Incident needs to be considered. Niihau was a Japanese pilot who crash landed on one of the remote Hawaiian islands after the attack and was helped by the locals of Japanese descent. This was taken as proof that no one of Japanese descent could be trusted.

When he was alive, I remember my dad talking to his Grandson about things in the past, some where good, others not so good. My son now has a sense of family history that few other kids have and I love that. If you want a sort of true to life comic strip (like this one) you have to understand that conversations like this happen and you may not like them but they do happen. Is it heavy? yes it is. Does it belong in the funny pages? That is up to each individual to decide. Don’t feel comfortable with the subject? Skip this page for a week or so it will get back on t your preferred track soon enough.

History, honestly presented, is always appropriate.

Why? Because it is the truth? By denying the truth we are guaranteed to repeat it.

As a member of a group whose members were sent to concentration camps by Nazis, I can sympathize with the grandfather. What is really disturbing is that some groups are trying to suppress the teaching of these facts in schools. We are supposed to learn from history so we can prevent it happening again. I am sure that this comment will be attacked by members of that group.

I was alive during that time. It’s true, but I don’t think it’s either funny or comic…unfollow

i am enjoying learning about this time in history to know that Japanese in Canada went through the same as the Japanese families here in the USA; a story that needs to be told!

When do we get to the part about the attack on Pearl Harbor, the Bataan death march, those tortured and killed in prison camps, the hellish war in the Pacific???

The war didn’t tear families apart. Racists tore families apart. And Canada is proving again they will employ Jack boots to crush citizens for honking their horns
