Got this yesterday morning (May 25, ’22) There are two or three running about. I have been seeing more of the mouse that wintered over. I catch him flitting from one spot to another. Click the pics for larger image.
This reminds me of a little sketch some friends and I put on for our English class one time (freshman year). It’s funny how I was just thinking about that sketch just yesterday. I don’t know what brought it to mind, but I was remembering the sketch and this one particular joke. In our sketch, we were a classroom full of young kids. A girl named Debbie played the harried teacher. Another friend, Margaret played the part of a boy (we were all girls, so someone had to play a boy). I even remember her name in the play was Joe Pentergastman (that was one of the jokes. The teacher made 2 boys write their names on the blackboard 100 times as punishment for acting up in class. “Joe” objected because his name was P-e-n-t-e-r-g-a-s-t-m-a-n and the other boy’s name was B-l-y). Anyway, the joke that just happened to pop into my head yesterday was the one where the teacher told Joe, “Take your seat.” Joe picked up his seat and asked, “Where do you want me to take it?”
I remember a couple of my lines too. In one, I tell the teacher, “My dog can do math.” The teacher asks, “Really?” and I say, “Yes. I ask him how much two minus two is and he says nothing.” And at the end of the play, we are leaving the classroom and I ask another girl how she did on the test we had. She says, “Um, er, well, it’s like this…” and I say, “Yeah, I failed too.”
Our teacher must have really liked our little play because she “stole” it. Not word for word, but the same premise, the same type of student/teacher jokes for a play the teachers put on for stunt night for our homecoming football game.
Today is high school graduation here. Before this county population exploded and there were just a few high school, the ceremonies were held at the local college. But now, the schools do it at the sites. Last year, the custodians took shifts in guarding the field and bleachers. During one shift, a streaker got onto the field. Then there was a confrontation with someone trying to hang a sign on the fencing (to advertise their business) Turned out they had the schools’ permission but the office failed to let the custodians know. (This happens a lot – this lack of communication) There were two more things that happened, too. So, last night was ‘guard the field’ again. Brad went to work at 1:00 AM to relieve theother custodian. He’s going to be dragging when he gets home because yesterday they all had to set up the chairs, tables and stage. He was already sore from that. These men and women work their tails off behind the scenes. I just love when people assume they get summers off. Nope. SO much hard work is done that can’t be done during school hours. They also put all of the furniture together, deliver it to classrooms, move things from from one classroom to another, help out the teachers and staff who need things done, etc. If you know a school custodian or just see one at a school, give them a shout-out.
Most of the ones at the high school are over 60 or approaching it. I think the youngest is the head custodian and he’sprobably in his 40. It took several years of drama, firings and so forth until this group finally got Jason as the head. He’s awesome. He’s fair, he distributes work evenly and listens to his crew and is respected because of those things. Brad used to be the one the other 2 leads called for overtime, harder work, larger areas because Brad never said NO. Jason asks for volunteers and always seems to get them.
I’m glad your mom found “her place” and was happy.
Love the kleptomaniac joke in the second panel. Good one, Graham! XD On another note, saw a Wilson’s warbler, four robins, a rabbit, a chickadee, and a raven while out walking today.
