There are about 10,000,000,000,000,000,000 (ten billion billion) ants in the world, but “only” 8,000,000,000 (eight billion) humans. So, on what grounds are we the dominant species?
The Age of the Dinosaurs was 165 million years long. They shouldn’t have made Mom mad, she hit the “Reset Button” 65 million years ago with the Chicxulub asteroid. “Its not nice to fool mother nature.”
Humans are in charge of the supply chain that gets those Lucky Charms into the rabbit’s grasp, which has usually gone pretty well except for when the non-human world has interfered to establish dominance.
The biological and medical reality is that the “rulers” of the world are microbes. They have existed far longer than we have, they are greater in diversity and number. Heck, they are even greater in cumulative weight than humans. A well balanced and diverse representation of them in our bodies reduces inflammation, helps with our mental and physical health, and makes some essential nutrients accessible. Yes, we depend on some. Others nourish plants and sequester carbon. When we over-populate (especially combined with rapid transportation, the use of bushmeat (and do not pretend that you do not use bushmeat if you hunt ducks, deer, squirrels, etc for food), and the destruction of wild habitats then we find ourselves hosting some microbes for which we were not prepared. Think humans rule? Try getting sequelae of COVID and rethink that afterward.

How long have humans thought they were in charge?

The rabbit likes Lucky Charms? Good thing one of the charms isn’t rabbit’s feet.
