Happy President’s Day!I know George Washington and Abraham Lincoln are the presidents usually associated with this holiday. But I wanted to do something different. And I really like this quote by F.D.R.
As much as I generally admire Franklin Roosevelt, let us not forget that the man who said that “A nation does not have to be cruel to be tough,” was also the man who ordered the internment of most of the Japanese-Americans – men women and children – in the continental United States simply because they or their fathers and grandfathers originally came from a nation that the United States and Canada were at war with. And yes, I am aware that Canada, to its undying shame, did the same thing to our Japanese population.
It galls me when some people still snipe at Roosevelt for his economic efforts. If he had not acted as he did, likely we would be now a fascist country ruled by oligarchs, just as Russia has become.
I’m reading a book, “1944”, dealing with the war and during the meeting with Stalin and Churchill at Tehran that quote personified Roosevelt’s sentiment (quite, QUITE, different from Stalin). Looking at today’s climate in eastern europe it appears that the more things change the more they stay the same.

Some would-be despots should quit Stalin and come in out of their reign.

And may every person who would have a “tough” despot as President take note of the words of the toughest President to have served since Lincoln.

Probably a nation that’s cruel isn’t tough — and that goes double for such a nation’s “leaders”.
