Headline: “Grandparents want help hiding their bigotry from the kids”
The letter writer is part of a same-sex marriage coming up on the 30th anniversary. Her in-laws refused, for the first ten years, to have anything to do with the couple. They came around (a bit) after the writer and her wife adopted two or more children. But – the in-laws say they still consider the marriage wrong, and won’t attend the anniversary celebration. They demand that the couple’s children be told a lie about why they aren’t attending. The writer doesn’t want to lie to her kids.
Carolyn Hax’s reply began: "Gotta love people who insist on multiple years of multiple lies to protect themselves from the consequences of their so-called acts of conscience.
“Don’t for a second accept your in-laws’ sorry attempt to pass the blame onto you.
“If anything destroys your family, it will be, in descending order of culpability: your in-laws’ homophobia, their lies and any lies you tell to cover their lies and homophobia.”
All you get is mean right back at you. Never argue in an unmoderated environment. Just go home and beat your head against a wall. Otherwise, you’re exactly like AHitler. /s
