I suspect this story is apocryphal, but I’m too lazy to look it up for sure. Somebody supposedly asked Michelangelo how he managed to sculpt his astonishingly beautiful statue of David, and he modestly replied that the image was in there all along, all he had to do was take away the stone that surrounded it.
