Strange, isn’t it. Can’t find any information on it, but the copy at http://www.johnhartstudios.com/wizardofid/ is in B&W so someone else must be doing the coloring.
I don’t think it was MEANT to be colored. In Sunday strips Sir Rodney’s tunic (over his chain mail) is red, but in dailies it’s colored black for the contrast. Also, the skin tone’s a lot “pinker” than on the Sundays.

I suspect the added color is the result of a governent bail out of the flailing comic strip industry.
