Either it took an unusually long time, or else teaching has aged him prematurely.

So his time in grade is Current age minus, say 5 years before kindergarten. If he quits right now, then he has to remain retired for (current age minus 5 years) to make it half. Then add one minute (or day, maybe depending on how accurate the clock is).

You are never graded on the most important things in life. It’s pass or fail.

There are doctorates, and then there are doctorates. The ones that are worth it come with a LOT of work and deserve respect, yes.

Is Spaetzle referring to his time in a ‘classroom’? That might be less than half his life so far.

As to Caulfield, when it comes to understanding things that seem to take up large amounts of one’s life for no apparent gain, he ain’t seen nothin’ yet.

Oddly, I don’t think anyone in the strip has ever called him “Dr.” It always seems to be “Mr. Spaetzle.”

If Caulfield spent half his life in school, he would be 6 years old?
