Eye patches were probably used to avoid wasting time, waiting for your eyes to adjust, when going inside and outside all the time.
Just shift the eye patch to the other eye, and you can go inside without tripping on things.
You see, people used to be very dumb, and didn’t know how to operate light switches, in them days.
