I love The Nutcracker. More importantly, my youngest daughter loves it. I chaperoned a school trip when she was in the second grade, and I got to watch her as her eyes sparkled to the music, costumes, sets and the grace of the dance. It became a Christmas tradition for her to jump up in my lap and she and I watch it together. She is now eleven and in the sixth grade. We went back last Christmas, and she still has that wonder in her. Before I left for work last night she sat down on my now considerably smaller lap, and we watched the opening scene before I had to leave. Every year my lap gets a little smaller, but she still wants to watch The Nutcracker with me. I am hoping that when my lap is too small, she will want to sit on the chair arm and watch it with me.
