Wow!! Talk about grade inflation! When I was in school, it was $1.00 for A’s and $.50 for B’s. (sigh) I’d go back to school, but Mom and Dad are no longer with us. :-(
For me, “A“‘s got a “good job” comment, “B“‘s got a “you need to work on this”, a “C” would have meant mandatory extra study time.
Anything lower was unacceptable (and never happened in my case)
Some of my friends got a quarter for “A””s, and a beating for “D“‘s.

Some kids just can’t be bribed into working harder. Maybe they already know the value of the dollar and have decided it’s just not worth it.

Maybe the kid’s a savant whose talent is school. He already has the A’s and B’s but thinks he has to pay dad for getting them.

I think dad saved a lot money. There were no “A”, or “B”.
