Sam: "Etruria. Indigenous to loamy Turkish hillsides, these dazzlers are endangered, thus rarely seen. Ours are individually hand-wrapped in soft linen and lovingly sumggled into neighboring Bulgaria... where they are graded and shipped in hollowed-out cheese wheels to our vendor in Newark. Limited availability." You bought a hot bulb? Zonker: I can protect it better than the Turks. Plant: Got deer?

That’s not all he imports from Turkey.

Did Zonk buy seeds for a deer-eating plant?

deer only go for tulips and hyacinths. Mice, voles, ground hogs, and red squirrels, THEY LOVE daffodils! You have to plant those in wire mesh to have them make it through most winters.

I swear our deer population think that I plant all those tulip bulbs in the fall for them to have a spring snack!
Can’t you hunters out there kill a few more deer and reduce the numbers so that they don’t smack into my car in the fall while they are chasing some attractive female deer across the road and not looking where they are going? Or chewing my tulips down to nothing every spring? Or jumping the vegetable garden fence no matter how high I make it?
Has Garry ever done a story line on hunting? It’s an idea.
I love this current one. I think it’s very well done and funny.

Garry Trudeau is NOT boring! He just doesn’t always stay with political topics. He’s a creative person, and less limited in scope than most other comic strip writers.
Come to that, the last time I did not enjoy this strip was when he portrayed a house where sinners went to be forgiven (notice I did not say ‘to repent’). Something about the Republican party. I did my best. I faithfully read the strip every day. But I just wasn’t able to get interested in the doings of right wing people.
Actually I’m not sure I believe they exist. I remember the first time I met one. I just stared at him, trying to grasp that he was real, and that he believed what he was saying… And don’t forget that as a Canadian, what Americans call ‘middle of the road’, I call ‘somewhat to the right’.
But the fact that I wasn’t interested wasn’t Trudeau’s fault!

I think I read that to discourage squirrels from eating bulbs, you used cayenne pepper? or was it garlic? You mixed it into the soil. Or something.
But of course! In this brave new world: GOOGLE IT!! I’m sure there are many solutions on the web to the problems of deer and squirrels!

deer only go for tulips and hyacinths. * Plant roses ah 1,000 yards on the other side of those . You’ll see first choice .

I read that in certain areas (New England?) the deer were a protected species, so no hunting was allowed. Since their natural enemies, wolves, had been wiped out in these areas, they just multiplied enormously, to the point that there were enough of them to be a real nuisance (as described by @summerdog).
The suggestion was made that hunting should be allowed, up to a certain quota, and monitored each year to see whether they were properly kept in check, or whether the quota should be raised or lowered. I don’t know if that was done.
