(I’m posting this info on some of the more heavily commented GoComics sites. Feel free to repost.)
If you’re reading comics at GoComics, you’re probably also reading comics at comics.com.
And if so, you’ve noticed that Comics.com has been down hard since Saturday.
The comics.com site hasn’t shut down and it’s not the victim of a hacking attack. The short version there’s a DNS problem. The site’s still there, but the Internet can’t find it. That’s why comics.com can’t put up a “We’re working the problem” sign on their main page. Well, they COULD, but it wouldn’t do any good. The rest of the internet couldn’t find the page.
The good news is that there’s a workaround to view the site and the strips. Go to http://www.softsailor.com/news/7155-comics-com-down-for-second-day-in-a-row.html and look for the comments by Comic Geek and patrick. I’d recommend reading the entire thread (it’s not that long), but the posts by Comic Geek and patrick are the importants ones.
Note that the workaround requires editing a system file. If you don’t know what “DNS” means, or you don’t know the kinds of problems you can create for yourself by incorrect editing of a system file, then you probably shouldn’t edit the system file. Find someone to help you edit the file.
I initially had problems with comics.com sites I had bookmarked as www.comics.com instead of just comics.com (note the leading www), but I think that might have been a typo that has since been fixed. In my case, changing all my comics.com bookmarks from www.comics.com to just comics.com fixed my problem.
I did a reboot in as well, but I’m not sure that was really necessary. A reboot can’t hurt, though.
NOTE: You’re have to re-edit the system file, to reverse the changes, once comics.com gets its DNS problem solved.
My attempts at contacting the person who I wanted to write the introduction for “Suffragettes Gone Wild!” have all been rebuffed. My E-mails have been unanswered and my letters to her have all been returned “Return to Sender - Rejected by Addressee.”
In other words, I think Rachel Maddow is mad at me.
Of course, maybe I’m overreacting and it’s the Guardian Beasts in the mail room who are keeping me from her. Maybe the real life equivalents of the Hardball Dragon and the Olber Man are the ones defeating me. So if anyone who reads this can get in touch with Rachel, please let her know that the ribbing she got in the strip was lighthearted and done with love. I would still love to have her pen a few words.
So at this point I’m plowing ahead with the book without a contribution from her. Corey Pandolph will be writing the introduction as TOBY: Robot Satan. I’ll do a foreword and probably afterword myself. I’m moving the review blurbs (from “Comics Buyers’ Guide” and “The Washington Post” this time) to the front cover, and the back cover will be taken up completely by a “Refused by addressee” envelope from Dr. Maddow. I’m still looking at a release date around Halloween; look for discount pre-order information shortly.
OK, it now appears that as I was posting my info on a workaround to the problems with the comics.com site, comics.com was fixing their problem. I’ve seen several people say that they can now get to the comics.com site without editing the system file.
If you’re still having problems getting to comics.com, wait a while before doing anything. First, the fixes comics.com made will take a while to propagate through the Internet. Second, the site will probably be heavily loaded for a while, due to people catching up on their favorite strips.

Who’s the new girl?

mivins: She’s Isabella of Spain. She was there for “Queen Eye For The Peasant Guy,” and I think I’ve used her at least once before.

The first trip to “Tudor’s” (referenced here) was from May 15-19, 2006, for those who want to go look it up.

Hello, all. Update on the new book.

Is any of this the reason why there’s no strip Sept. 8? -or did the Garbage er the Garden State change Labor Day to Tuesday?

GoComics glitch. The strip is up at http://www.newadventuresofqueenvictoria.com
