Morning, Annie Fans -LITTLE ORPHAN ANNIE AND SANDYBy Harold Gray, 1933CHAPTER 10 – A Real ClueNow, after all her searching, it appeared as though Annie had found a real clue. One afternoon after school was over, Annie went to see Doctor Dose. She waited until he was alone in the office. Then she went in. In her hand were two sealed envelopes. “Say, Doc,” said Annie. “Can you tell if a bunch of hair came off the same animal as another bunch o’ hair?”The doctor swung around in his chair and faced her. “Hm-m,” he said, “Yes, Annie.” Given two specimens of hair, I can tell if they came from the same animal.” Annie carefully opened the two packets. In each was a little bunch of curly reddish hair.“Ah, yes,” said the doctor. “I see. This appears to be a sample of Sandy’s hair. Have you found a clue to who tried to run him down and kill him?”Annie was still keeping her council. “Maybe I have, Doc,” she said. “And maybe I haven’t. Do I have to tell you why I want to find out ‘bout that hair?”“No, indeed, Annie,” said the doctor. “I’ll test these two samples and let you know the result.” After she had gone, the doctor stood at the window and watched her hurry down the street. “Hm-m,” he said. “A lot of people think children tell all they know. Well, there’s one little lady who doesn’t. I’d give a nickel to know what she’s found out, but a million dollars wouldn’t buy a secret from that kid. She’s a mighty fine youngster.”Nor was the doctor the only one from whom Annie kept her secret. The next morning, as Annie and Mr. Futile were walking to the store, they met Mr. Pincher, the constable. “Hello, Annie,” he said. “Have you any trace yet, of who it was who hit Sandy?”Annie said nothing of her suspicions, whatever they might be. “Oh,” she answered in a discouraged tone. “It’s been so long since it happened that it’d be pretty hard to find out who did it.” Mr. Futile was agreed as usual. “Yes,” he answered. “It’s hopeless after all this time. “No use trying to find out who did it now.” As Mr. Pincher continued his beat, Mr. Futile said to Annie: “Yes, whoever it was got clean away and will never be punished. There’s so much injustice in the world, Annie.”Annie politely agreed, but when Mr. Futile had turned aside to go to the store while she went on to school, she said to herself: “Sure, there’s a lot o’ mean guys get away with their meanness, but it’s ‘most always ‘cause decent folks are too lazy to keep after ‘em till they catch ‘em. Boy, the bird who socked Sandy is goin’ to get punished. But why tell anyone ahead o’ time?”

APOI – I post the link every day at Benitin Y Eneas, Foxtrot Spanish and Annie, main page. I don’t know how many people take advantage of it, but I keep doing it anyway because I’m just one of those stubborn people that just doesn’t like to quit.
