I would argue that there is another way: assembly lines. Long ago, I was getting jobs via a temporary work service, and I was assigned to a place where they prepared frozen meals. I was putting frozen chunks of potato in little cardboard dishes. It was horrible. I tried focusing my mind on something, and could not. I felt my thoughts just draining away, and I stood there in a mental vacuum. I lasted two days.
