We were vacationing in Europe, and I was at the front desk of the hotel asking about something. The clerk made a reference to my wife as, “Your woman.” I confess that one took me aback.

Tell me if I’m wrong, but in German, “Frau” means both “wife” and “woman”, so it could be just slightly-off translation.
