Danae: Daddy...I need some help with a new career plan I'm working on.
Joe: Ok...
Danae: What exactly is a "half truth"?
Joe: A whole lie.
Danae: Note to self: Never ask a parent an ethics question when planning a career in advertising.
I put forth an idea in undergrad accounting.I was told I would go to jailI put forth the same idea in grad schoolI was told I would be successfulDoes Philo 101 have any place in the REAL world? Is half more or less?Is truth subjective or objective? Will the bottom line be affected. Will she respect mu honesty or her new BMW?Need we ask these questions?
I can’t say I enjoyed my Marketing classes. The clashed with my Business Ethics class. I do not pick up the phone for tele-marketers and I will not watch commercials.
They have Business Ethics classes? I remember my journalism ethics classes could be reduced to “see if they ever wrote a letter to the editor because the Supreme Court ruled that short of producing a memo showing actual malice, anyone who ever ‘sought public notoriety’ could not prevail in suing for liable.”
Thus the Dalla Snooze could claim an on-the-ballot candidate was not running when he was, with total immunity, and the reporter who repeated it after being corrected could still get on the Rachel Maddow show as an expert on Rick Perry.
Problem with half-truths is that you have to remember what you said, much the same with whole lies. So watching some commericals can be fun if from the same company.

Don’t worry, Danae, when you go for your MBA, they’ll thoroughly excise any hint of ethics that may be hiding in the depths of your soul…

Media types seldom lie, but rarely tell the truth.

Two half-truths still equal a big lie.

When Danae inevitably crashes and burns, daddy will be there to pick up the pieces and give them a decent burial.

Danae needs to take a more fundamental approach to the problem:Never go into advertising if you are at all concerned about ethics.
