doc: you mean “there were”? Yeah, I was one of the lucky ones too. My ancestors who walked over weren’t very obvious, so most considered me totally white (der meisterrasse). However, I didn’t consider that any great accomplishment. It wasn’t until I came back from exile in Canada in 1978 (I went with a V A draft classification, lest anyone jump to conclusions) that a year passed without me seeing some policeman beating up a black person in downtown Dallas. It might have been because I live 65 miles from there since returning or I wouldn’t be able to even say that. Blacklisting was very popular in the ’50s, which is why I had to go to Canada to feed my family. Now the kids are grown and my wife can take care of herself, so I am back in my native land. Free and brave are questionable.
