Jiggs had a wartime career, too, as the bomb-toting symbol of the 11th Bombardment Squadron. McManus was an officer in the 11th, and Jiggs was painted on the nose section of their DH-4 aircraft. (The 11th was a hard-luck outfit and was nicknamed the 11th Bewilderment Squadron.)
I can’t find a good picture of the 11th’s DH-4s anywhere, but the nose art itself is here:
Loved the strip where Maggie chains Jiggs to the bed so she can go to the opera and he can’t go out. He disassembles the bed and hauls the headboard over to play poker with Dinty and the boys, and when he comes back he uses the headboard as a shield against the barrage of crockery that Maggie heaves at him. The strip was always funny, but nobody seemed to bat an eye at the obscene way Maggie treated her husband.
I read that there was once a comic called “Mr. Jack,” about a talking tiger who was forever cheating on his wife. Will there be a sample of it this week?

Jiggs’s wartime career started in 1917. Getting hard to keep track of all these wars . . .

You can judge the changes of the times by the era a comic strip was written in. I fear the age of the Hip-Hop comics.
