The times, they are a changin’. Thank goodness. Read a report a little while back in Ad Age that the percentage of younger people getting drivers licenses has fallen to its lowest level in years. More of them are getting over having a car as an expression of their personalities. Blame the Internet and also cell phones with their texting, where you can get a personalized avatar to express yourself at no cost, and where you don’t actually have to drive anywhere to communicate with friends and other people. Add in online shopping and telecommuting and the generations under 30 don’t need cars as much.

Gigantor has it with less interest in cars among youths due to phones, video games, and online interaction generally – the other part of it is insurance costs many times what it cost me in high school 25+ years ago, yet the minimum wage has not even tripled in that time. Cars, new or used, and gas are more expensive compared to wages 20-30 years ago too. So I suspect some of the diversion into other interests stems from cars becoming relatively more expensive to buy and keep up.
