My ex-wife and her sister pulled that ONCE and then quickly decided they were hungry after all when I read them the riot act after I spent time getting things cooked, table set, and food on the table. Never had that happen with either her or the kids in the remaining 19 years of the marriage.
They probably didn’t like what was for lunch and picked at it. Psychlady has the right idea… give them something healthy to appease the hunger monster and keep your usual schedule.
Back in the 50s, our first TV was installed in the wall at the head of the kitchen table (Dad was quite a McGyver). A turntable let us also watch it from a couch in the den. We saw all the wires when not watching, tho’.
1 flour burrito … refried beans … shredded cheese … 1 chopped up hotdog … black olives … sour cream … put it together and microwave for 1 minute …. called a “shortly” …
old girlfriend’s mom made it one time – youngest child was sent in by Dad to find out WHAT dinner was going to be … mom thought daughter was asking WHEN and replied “shortly” … daughter told Dad – “we’re having shortlies” … name stuck.
I’d tell them that if they didn’t come and eat it now while it’s hot, then they’re going to have to eat it when it’s cold . . . and they wouldn’t be allowed to reheat it in the microwave either! That should teach them to come when they’re called for dinner!

Give them an apple and cook in your own time. My grandmother always said, “It’s ready when it’s ready!!”

When I had to cook for the kids, their favorite was macaroni and cheese with chopped hot dogs.

I remember watching after school cartoons and comedy shows while eating supper on the coffee table.
