According to the glossary of pro wrestling terms, “bumps” are:
Bump: when a wrestler hits the mat or ground.15 A flat back bump is a bump in which a wrestler lands solidly on his back with high impact, spread over as much surface as possible.1 A phantom bump occurs when a wrestler or referee takes a bump even though the move they are selling was visibly botched or otherwise not present.1 Phantom bumps are most commonly performed when the offensive wrestler is new.
So, Thunderchild is a loose cannon, who believes in and has adopted his persona in his real life, and might go for the shoot rather than the work—which would explain why his popularity has been declining. Definitely take care, Tracy!
I’m not a wrestling fan, but — wrestlers deserve a lot more respect – nobody bad mouths stunt men, who wear pads and can do retakes. But wrestling is esentially a live stunt show, with close-ups, visible to the audience on all sides – doing some potentially disastrous stunts. You just have to remember Owen Hart.
It seems odd that comic fans who read strips about time-travelling cave men, outer space monsters, and super heroes with fantastic powers would decry wrestling as not being real.
I agree with you NightShade09 that wrestlers are highly trained stunt men. I have several friends who are pro wrestlers and I would challenge anyone who believes wrestling to be fake to try to flip around like they do and see how fake it is.
Wrestling is a legitimate entertainment form which dates back as far as we have history. Shakespeare includes wrestlers entertaining the king in a scene in one of his plays. Honest Abe used to wrestle on the lawn of the White House. And like wrestling or not, WWE is one of the highest rated cable TV programs each week. It is definitely a part of pop culture and therefore prime for a tale in Dick Tracy.
Just remember, for everyone who puts down wrestling for being fake, there are probably just as many people who believe that reading comics is only for kids.
Sammy to Liz, “My what a BIG round-target you have for an eye!”Liz to Sammy, “All the better to see Tracy drinking from his COMICS mug, seeing out of the side of my head makes it easy to cross panels!” WHAT?….
I remember Killer Kowalski, originator of the famous CLAW HOLD that caused his victim to instantly give up or risk having his stomach turned inside out through his abdomen. He once ripped one of Yukon Eric’s ears off. No fake there!
Before my time, KK attended the University of Detroit, majoring in Electrical Engineering. A couple of decades or so later, I got my BEE from the same school. I never tore anyone’s ear off, though I did give several lab partners electric shocks.
and @Maxine_VillerI did find some links that cover wrestling moves as apposed to wrestling terms. Most of the moves mentioned can be found here, as well as quite a few that weren’t:Professional wrestling throwsProfessional wrestling attacksPin (professional wrestling)Professional wrestling holdsProfessional wrestling double-team maneuversBoston crabThat covered most of them. I couldn’t find anything for Wewoka Switch, Reverse Souffle, or Spinnin’ Cock Lock. It is possible they are listed under a different name. Wewoka sounds localized, and I think the Reverse Souffle is actually Reverse Suplay a form of Suplex. Correct me if I am wrong. Maybe the two of you can give the rest of us a definition? You can also add them to Wikipedia, that is what is so great about it after all.
Every year a ballet troupe would come to Little Rock for Christmas and whenever I heard that the Russian Nutcracker would be in town, I wondered if he still had the championship belt.
