My mother said I’d go blind if I did too much of this, so I had to take a break.Enlarged (click the clicked image to enlarge more) available from here. To answer @bluskies question: this (supposedly) has the English title. Google translates it to be Crab Three Bathers. So far, 7 works by this artist have appeared in Mr. Melcher’s blog.I wonder what it is with this artist, nudes, and crabs. He used it as a theme in at least 3 paintings, one of which was lost by the Carnegie Museum of Art in a bet on the outcome of last year’s Super Bowl. The thing is I don’t know which one. This report says it is this painting — the crab is more apparent than in the strip’s painting, the one this report claims was bet. Almost everyone says it was the first — you would think a magazine with Art Knowledge in its name would know the difference. The third (search for crab) is this pastel.P.S. Yesterday, Pearls Before Swine mentioned Rubens. One of his paintings had been featured in this strip before I had started doing this and I’ve added a comment there, if you’re interested.
As to crabs in his paintings, I assume there must have been a lot of sand crabs on the beaches (rather uncomfortable for nude bathing, but considering how awkward it must have been to swim in victorian swim suits, I would much rather swim naked. Only alone- in my own pool- with no wildlife- not even bugs.
Renoir painted mostly ladies and girls and my only homage has 2 little girls (my grandaughters) playing with Cuddles Cockatoo on a pastel pillow. As I did all the paintings of Cuddles in acrylic paint, technique does not suit him, so it is kept in my room (not my LR gallery). She’s holding a crab. The image that shows it best, for me anyway, is this, from the article that said it was bet on the Super Bowl. It’s why, when there are several colorations, I provide more than one. Hopefully the true coloration is in there. The images are just photographs of paintings, no better than the photographer who took them, perhaps using just some point-and-shoot camera.

Looks like somebody’s getting an “indian burn”. Meanwhile, the boys (?) in the background look like they’re in protective mode.

Only the French, a people steeped in the culinary arts, would think of using crab for sunscreen. Crab SALAD might work, though…Merci, MA!
