When I was in grade one I knew there were twelve grades, but I thought the new school year started at the new year, so I hoped that I would be in grade 2. I knew this meant I would be finished school in 6 years.

As they say in the “awl bidness”, Alberta is just Texas with a funny accent. When I started to school, it was only eleven grades – which may explain something about Texas. (I was in the third grade when they added a year – my sister got an extra semester, and a cousin got the full twelve.)

As far as I know Alberta has always had twelve grades, but B.C. and Ontario at on time had 13. I felt lucky to live in Alberta. As I understand it, grade 13 was equivalant to the first year of university. Thinking about it now, with university tuitions as high as they are, the ones getting the first year “free” were the lucky ones.

When I was in school we got July and August off. Nowadays, teachers complain about not having enough time to teach kids anything. Now you know why. Three months off? Ridiculous!!

The grades don’t end; neither do the tests. Suck it up, pal, retirement is your only out (if ss is still alive then).

Albertaguy: Back in the ’70s when I was there, BC had 12 and only Ontario had 13.
