Whoa. How on earth did Gina beat Francis at Chess?

I lived this part of Nate’s life, in grade school. My chosen rival was a girl who did everything better than I. Lincoln is Gina based on your childhood nemesis?

Next Gina will replace artur as number 1

What if she beats Artur?

She beats arthur, arthur may break up with her & nate will have an cahcne again! Who knows.

She is missing the idea in team…

It may be this is the one thing Nate is better at than Gina.

I could see that happening. Nate would have to root for Artur just to thwart Gina.

Then again, this IS Fran-siss she’s handily spanking……..Child’s play for Nate….she’s picking apart the easy stuff first.

She won’t beat Artur………….and I don’t think she’ll beat Nate…

UNLESS……………….as with Linus all those decades ago when he ran for school president…..Nate finds a way to do something stupid. Stay tuned!!

So Gina is better than Francis after all. Let’s see if she can beat Artur. The one who defeated Nate.

Seems to me this is a teachable moment for Mr. Rosa. You don’t get better by only competing against people you’re already better than…you need to compete against people better than you in order to learn what works to beat those people, and then learn how to do those things. That is how you get better at anything. The one who has the least to gain here is actually Gina. (Assuming, of course, she’s going to turn out as good as this panel suggests.)

Mr. Rosa might also point out, especially to Nate, that a juggernaut chess team might travel to new towns to compete regionally, statewide, and even nationally, against teams from other schools, which involves meeting…new girls.

This strip is so well-written that I have faith this won’t turn out like it appears. To borrow a football quote, The suck-up must go down, and must go down HARD.

Nate & Gina are two of my favorite characters, along with Francis, Mrs. Godfrey, and Chad. I think being a “Pro” Chess player has gone to Gina’s head. I hope someone like Nate will beat Gina in a game of Chess to teach Gina in a lesson in humility.

If Gina loses to someone like Nate, she will probably will be sputtering, start to cry, or quit the Chess team. I hope that doesn’t happen, but I would like to see Gina be humbled instead of being a braggert. I had a classmate in high school in which she was nice,sweet, and good-looking, but she didn’t boast and finished with the second best grade point average in my class (98.7 percentage I think.).

The trouble with Gina isn’t that she is brilliant, it isn’t that she is good at chess, it isn’t even that she is better than Nate and his friends at it. It’s how smug she is about all of that. It’s that air of superiority that she exudes. Makes you want to crack her one right in the mouth to wipe that smug expression off. The only thing worse than a sore loser is a poor winner.

So she’s 3rd in the chess team now.
