I am amused at the surveillance videos they show on the 10pm news. “Does anybody recognize this criminal? Call the tips hotline.” The cheapo cameras the stores use are so fuzzy you sometimes can’t tell the criminal from the door frame.
I saw an episode of Murder Book that was just like this. People saw a guy that was most likely the last person at the gas station diner the night that a nice, older lady was working her first solo shift there. He robbed her and then stabbed her. He was transient and so nobody in town recognized him. At one point the police actually WERE hoping he would just show back up in town and someone would be able to point him out. They had no other evidence at all to work with. It took 30+ years and advanced in DNA technology to figure out who killed her. All it took was the ability to properly test the blood on the knife, and it turned out that a tiny portion of his blood got mixed into hers. Hard to imagine that her family had to wait so long for justice.
