Transcript:
Beni: I got one! Alice: I don't catch lightning bugs any more. Petey says they can go "nova." Beni: They what? Alice: They wait and wait, then they go BLINK! Just like that! Beni: I don't believe it. Alice: That's what Petey says. Noise: BLINK! Beni: What else does Petey say? Alice: Ladybugs can smell fear.

I miss ladybugs. We do not have them in the Pacific Northwest. But they were everywhere when I lived in North Dakota as a child. They seemed magical.

I remember catching lightening bugs when my family visited Colonial Williamsburg, years ago when I was a child. This was a lot of fun - until Dad had to take me back inside because we started seeing bats! Being I was a young child, I had no idea that bats are not as friendly as lightening bugs, and you shouldn’t try to mess with them. (Though I’d love to see Petey’s response to that particular situation!) ;)

cleokaya: We have ladybugs in California, but not nearly as many as there used to be. Going away like the butterflies, I guess. Strange how humans can, almost accidentally, impact the good species, but something we do our best to eradicate, like mosquitoes, doesn’t even take notice. PS - Like your new avatar (and today’s Cul de Sac, as usual).

Cleo, Ushindi I think you’re both meaning lightning bugs. We have lots of ladybugs in the PNW. (We also have some lightning bugs, but you wouldn’t know it because ours don’t light up!)

Thanks, Steve, but while I can’t answer for cleo, I actually meant little red (and orange) ladybugs. They are nowhere near as numerous here as they used to be.

Aw, don’t blink or you’ll miss ‘em. Kinda like childhood.

I love how the blink is so powerful that it blows her hair back.

I also love how Alice’s hair is blow back by the BLINK. And how Benis hair is all cattywhumpus.

This one rates right up there with last year’s “exploding socks” episode!
In our rush to rid ourselves of Japanese beetles and gypsy moths, we’ve overused pesticides to the point that we’re wiping out ladybugs and fireflys. Pretty sad, really.

This is one of my all-time favorite Cul de Sac strips. Panel 5: Poor Beni, doomed forever to see the sense in Petey’s theories.

And ladybugs also poop on you.
