it’s going to take more than one glass of milk to swallow those cookies down… maybe two gallons’ worth

We don’t call them rock cakes for nothing…

My sister’s cooking. We called her Lucretia – although not to her face.

Once again we have a succinct illustration of the differences between Alice and Petey. I like them both.

True fruit cake has gotten an unfair reputation. A good fruit cake is wonderful. The store bought stuff that is passed off as fruit cake is horrible.

After seeing grandma’s house…I’d be leary of eating anything prepared there without my cleaning the place first. Those may not be raisins Alice.

Road tar gives it more oomph.

Back before the D.O.T. started adding artificial substances to it the road tar (asphalt) was safe to chew and kids loved it. Lost a lot of roads that way…

Pretty pathetic that they don’t like their grandmother’s cookies.

O boy, this brings back some less than pleasant memories. My elderly Great Grandmother with poor eyesight once made a cake for the family, and I devoured two big pieces. My Mom and sister neglected to tell me it was full of meal worms ( they had gotten into the flour ) until much later. So much love and retro-active barfing.

“They’re a little chewy.” —Classic defense of Grandma, Madeline!

And, one cookie should keep Alice both busy and quiet for at least an hour, maybe all afternoon….
