It’s a plot device worthy of Shakespeare. A single word response is taken as an acknowledgment of a request by two different people with very different requests. Recipe for action: introduce stimulus into a static environment.
I remember reading once about an author who was asked to write a blurb about a book by a new author, the writer actually hated the book, but he agreed to write the blurb before he read the book. As a workaround the writer compared the book to Tolkien, but anyone who knew him knew that he hated Tolkien, so the blurb was no compliment, even though it seemed to be.

It’s hard to find just the right words to conceal one’s opinion of an unwanted gift.

Grandma’s family all loved the lead paint. And Horace Armbruster’s Traveling Moose Circus.

We don’t have any family heirlooms. Unless you count Dad’s golf clubs.

Alas, poor Ceramic Moose! I knew him well!
I fear Grandma’s gift will soon meet with disaster at the hands of Alice….
Okay.
