He’s probably thinking of Pantalone, but he’s imagining a cross betwee Arleccino and Pulcinella. Not that any of these characters have much in common with the “scaly anteaters” (not actually very closely related to normal anteaters).

Once again, a little over 10 years ago, Richard posted a blog entry regarding this strip:

Madeline seems to be the only center of gravity in this comic universe. Every other character seems to be about thirty percent off center.

@monkeysky, I think he may be thinking of a harlequin: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harlequin

Taking a completely off-the-rails tangent, there’s a series of dystopian/sci fi/mystical novels called “The Fourth Realm” trilogy by John Twelve Hawks which feature an ancient society of warriors called harlequins. Alice could go as one of those, and even fewer people would get the reference than can figure out Petey’s costumes.

How quaint! The Otterloops are drinking a box-wine and eating cookies! Family discussions of this sort can be very productive. Or not.

    Pantalone (ex Wikipedia): https://tinyurl.com/yyb94wzt

Alice would probably be a better Renaissance clown than scaly anteater….

Was this before or after people started thinking clowns were creepy? Or did Kramer start that?

Any costume that includes a club is probably a bad idea for Alice.

Mr. Otterloop must not know his zoology.

She could be an opera singer and star in Pagliacci.
