My mom used to say, “Don’t do what do, do what I say.” What did your Mom or Dad say to you?

Tony – I commend your mom for the Zen-like quality of “Don’t do what do.” As my dad used to say, “Don’t eat what eat.”

I once had a boss that said, " Don’t do what I said; do what I THINK."

My dad was full of them . . . aside from “don’t do as I do, do as I say”. A few of his favorites were, “children are to be seen and not heard”, “spare the rod and spoil the child”, and I think his favorite was “before you ask the answer is NO”.

My mother likes to tell the story of how I ruined her birthday. Seems giving birth interfered with her plans.

It usually went something like this “….because I’m the adult” or “…because I am the parent”.

My mom had a variation, “Do as I say, not as I do.” she also use to like to say, “This house is a dictatorship, not a democracy.”

I used to take long walks at night. Mom’s concerns were met with, “It’s okay, Mom; God will protect me.” Mom’s response was, “God gave you a brain too!” Never forgot it.
