I think I may have seen one of the earliest. I was a big fan of reading many SiFi authors. My fave was Anthony Boucher because of his point of view.
I saw many movies at the beginning of SiFi in cinema. Not only did none scare me, they did not impress me at all. The books were always better (and I have a great imagination). Probably the scariest was the original Nosferatu and that old one that starred Angela Landsbury in one about wolves.
Yes, yes and no. When Star Wars came out in 77’ I was 6. What freaked me out was the hand that walked around by itsself (don’t know the name of the movie) and the kid floating outside his friends window in Salems Lot.

Definitely a bad time, cousin Spork. (And it’s “no, I am your father.”)

Did you see Star Wars? Did you see Darth Vader? Did he scare you?

Vader scary? The Crimson Ghost now was a villain who could do some scary stuff with electronics (in the 1940s).

And Clayton Moore (The Lone Ranger) as the Crimson Ghost’s henchman.

x_Tech….. and Tony….the idea of the Lone Ranger turning out to be a bad guy’s henchman is scarier than Darth Vader!
At least when you see Darth Vader you know what he’s about.
Movies where good guys turn out to be villains are more frightening.

In the first Star Wars, Darth Vader had the best entrance of a villain in movie history. Ever.

Yeah. I loved the Yiddish accent in a science fiction movie.

Star Wars was the first date for the future Mrs. jbmlaw and me. Must have gone ok, she has not exiled me to Tatooine yet.
