There were lots more lines in our scripts when I was a kid…..

What with three kids crammed in the back seat for two or three thousand miles…

and my Dad dragging us out of our motels before sunrise….

    Some of the rules were

    100 miles before breakfast…

and at least 100 after dinner.

No stopping for the night before sunset….

or before 600 miles for the day.

    The dialog included….

    “S/he’s touching/looking at/pushing me…”

    “It’s my turn for….

    a window… the pillow….

    the red Lifesaver…. "

you name it, we fought over it…..

Oh, and since Dad insisted on smoking three cigars a day with the windows rolled up….

    “I need to throw up.”

We were tasked with finding a purple cow. The first one to spot it won. What the prize was is still unknown. Those were the days!

I get the feeling this strip is about a week late. Long weekend was last weekend.

Being an O.C., I didn’t have the trials that most kids have and since mom didn’t have any sense of direction, I was the designated navigator.

    .

That said, as a father of three, I had no clue what I was in for. Solution? All trips started at 8 PM or later.

There were only two of us, and we fought over everything. My parents used to pile books on the back seat and place a child-sized card table between us. A rimmed cookie sheet kept the crayons from rolling, and we would draw most of the trip. My sister was right-handed and I am a lefty, so this worked out well.

I thought lines like those just came naturally, depending on the part you’re playing.

What? No one went and fetched Tony’s QOTD? I guess I’ll have to trudge back with it.

    Tony’s QOTD: ‘All set?’

    Cuzn Ron…..

Thanks. Tony hadn’t posted a question yet when I went to bed…

and by then, it was already 3am here on the West Coast.

All set? Yeah, that’ll be the day.

Saucy…. your family was so much more civilised than mine.

Our trips rarely involved cities with rush hours, though……

Tended to be cross country, on major highways but avoiding metro areas.

Dad wouldn’t hear of taking 5 days from Ohio to California…..

    4 days was disappointing,

    three made him proud.
