In the early 70’s there was a circuit (race) know as the International Race of Champions, IROC. Professional drivers from different racing disciplines would compete against each other all driving the same type of car. The first car used was a Porsche 911. Eventually they switched to a Chevrolet Z28 as it was less expensive to run. Chevy released a IROC Z28 model for sale to the public shortly after that.

I test drove an IROC Z-28 back in 1988, and bought a Trans Am GTA instead. Much nicer and more civilized car…
