It’s not that I necessarily disagree with you, oldlegodad, it’s that I think you are only getting half the picture. If they were making money, it wouldn’t matter. If they were making cars people wanted to buy, they would make money. They willfully ignored everything but the high-profit high-gas-use cars, and figured they could bully and bribe Congress into protecting them. But there’s no defense against the market…
That’s just it mangus, they were (past tense) making big bucks on the big iron (big profit margin) because stupid Americans kept buying them. Had those gas-guzzlers sat on the lot 20 years ago, I’ll bet we would be driving a lot different automobile today.
I didn’t say small cars - the thing that is driving me wild is that GM execs have admitted they could have built hybrid cars something like six years ago and decided not to. And of course they killed their own advanced electric car long before that. I have a hunch I’ll be buying a comfortable full-size Camry hybrid long before I’ll ever want to buy a GM hunk of junk. They’re years and years behind the Japanese. Would I buy a Kia when it came out? I would not.
The UAW didn’t design the small pieces of s##t that Detroit tried to pawn off on us, so it’s not their fault. Cost cutting by management (so they could still get their bonuses) led to cheap materials, inferior engineering, and very lousy products.
And how many millions would this amount put in the hands of EVERY American? No bailout would be required and we’d all be buying new cars, homes, etc.; and we could even cancel Social Security and Medicare, paying for our own from the millions. Think about it.
