Eh, so that’s why they fills it with air, eh. Me never knews. Me thought it was filled with nitrogen gas or something and packed to keep the contents fresh for longer time.

In the mountains in Colorado, chip bags are all puffed out because the air pressure inside the bag is higher than outside the bag. I was driving over the divide once and the bag of chips in the bag seat spontaneously burst open scaring the heck out of me.

i’ve seen how the stockers shove the chips bags into the shelves. It’s a wonder that there are any whole potato chips at all in the bags. They’re all about 50% potato crumbs!

This comic strip is not half-empty, it’s full of the sound of one hand slapping Horace.

Well, the half full/half air ratio obviously doesn’t work. Nearly every bag of potato chips I buy lately is full of crushed chips.

Thicker chips and Pringles nesting to some extent reduce the broken chips but there’s no substitute for Lays thin chips.

For the record though, this is all actually true—this is precisely why bags of chips are seemingly half-empty, so to use the excess air as a cushion for the chips and try and minimize the chips getting crushed during the tumult of shipping, stocking, and handling. It’s not perfect, but the ratio they use isn’t an accident either. I’ve seen youtubers experiment around with seeing if more or less chips to a bag would work better, and they consistently find that the average half chips/half air ratio companies use is indeed the most ideal.

And once you realize that, I can sort of forgive the bags of chips not being quite as full as you’d expect. It’s at least for a valid reason.

It’s OK Horace, they aren’t charging you for the air

It’s literally “inflation”. Check that content weight may have changed recently for the same size bag. No manufacturer wants to lose valuable shelf space in the markets, so they will keep the package size the same, quietly change the labeling and ship more air. :) :(
