Around here it is bears that get to do whatever they want and you can’t inconvenience them in any way. And people are all good about that. Oh! The cute bear! Look! It is eating Junior, how cute!!
Early on a Sunday morning in 1968 my boyfriend, his friend and I were on our way to pick up the friend’s girlfriend, an aspiring model, for a photoshoot for her portifolio. We were all in the front seat of my boyfriend’s Corvair (I was sitting on the console; I was 17 and could do that then.) We came to a crossroad not far from our respective houses; an empty field on two sides of the road, a small nursery and greenhouse on one corner and fenced-in lawns well set back on the fourth. My boyfriend stopped at the stop sign, looked left and then asked his friend if he was ok to go from the right. His friend said, I will never forget it, “Yes (car moves forward) but not right now.” A Valiant built like a tank was coming up over a slight rise right at us, doing about 70, they estimated. My boyfriend floored the car. We were broadsided right behind the passenger compartment, right in front of the engine compartment. Our car, headed north, was lifted up (there were no tire marks), turned about about 240 degrees and landed some fifty feet away, facing southeast, sunk half-way up its hubcaps in the soft grass of the nursery. Nobody died or was even badly hurt except the Corvair. I tell the story because the local police told us, when we suggested that a stoplight might be a good idea, that the state, which owned the roads in question, would not put on there until there were at least three deaths. We apologized for not being able to accommodate them and went home. Bureaucracies! Oh, 55 years later? There’s a stoplight there.

I see this as a metaphor for how many of our government officials are treating crime in the cities they run.

Dang, I’d say it was in California but the beach isn’t populated with bums. Other then that Mr. Corriveau definitely got the California vibe right on.
