I don’t think Mamet knows how to properly use a compass. Just like presenting a Gen Z person with a rotary phone. Their first thought would be to look for the “ON” button.
I got lost beyond cognition and bought an early GPS. It drew a track and showed direction of travel, but didn’t have enough RAM for a map. I took it on a scout campout and the old leaders thought it was a novelty, but would never catch on. We walked across the campsite and the numbers changed in a short distance and matched when we returned to our original position.

Magnetic north is not polar north. The streets do not line up here because Missouri used magnetic north and Kansas used polar north.
