Buster Crabbe as Flash Gordon (from 1936 and later), yes! But I think the Age of Bleached Pro Wrestlers didn’t begin until Gorgeous George, in the early 1950s; so Chief Brandon and Dick are mixing eras here….
Different from what Gould did but, considering two of the thugs saw him up close a day ago, it makes sense to use a disguise when going undercover. I bet the Chief reads the Flash Gordon comic strip too which is published in the same papers as Dick Tra… oh, wait….
HannoX, he looks more like ol’ Ski Snoot to me, Bob Hope, especially the way he was drawn in his 50s era DC comic.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Adventures_of_Bob_Hopehttp://www.comicvine.com/adventures-of-bob-hope/49-1321/
You have to wonder how the colorists make their choices. I would guess that they look at the Sundays but in this case that wouldn’t help. The Comics Kingdom version has the Chief as a redhead and Tracy and Pat with silver/brown. At least the GoComics colorist got Pat right.
Please direct me to the film or strip in which Flash Gordon had a raggedy beard, that boy was clean on paper and Buster was even cleaner on screen. Ming’s beard was even trimmed.
@Knightman & WIld Bill 40Buster Crabbe was the eighth actor to play Tarzan, starring in 1933’s “Tarzan the Fearless.” The first screen Tarzan was 11 year old Gordon Griffith, who played Tarzan as a child in 1918’s “Tarzan of the Apes;” Elmo Lincoln appeared later in the film as the adult Tarzan.
Tracy’s most distinctive characteristic is his classic hook nose. The previous cartoonist of this strip sometimes (disgustingly) made his nose look like a pig’s snout.
@mumblesI think Chief Brandon is referring to the color of Tracy’s bleached hair, which should be yellow-blonde (like Flash’s). But once again the GoComics colorist got it wrong.I never saw Flash with a beard either. Dr. Zarkov, however…
@RockHouseI thought of old Ski Nose, too, but given the size of Brandon’s snozz, I thought Durante a better fit. After all, DC exerated the size of Hope’s nose. There was no need to exagerate Durante’s.
Here’s a odd little bit of Buster Crabbe lore … Frank Frazetta did a short lived syndicated comic strip featuring … BUSTER CRABBE. The strip cast him as a cowboy and it was obvious Frazetta drew from photos of Mr. Crabbe … probably movie stills. The art was exellent but the writing was sort of “of its time” and doesn’t hold up very well by todays standards. Lets just say that the writer was no Mike Curtis.
I had no idea Buster Crabbe was in a comic strip. Thanks to your prompting I found his cowboy persona also appeared in a series of 12 comic books by Famous Funnies Publications.

He’s not the only one whose hair changed color – Brandon’s was white last week when he introduced Dick to Pat.

Funny, I always thought Dick Tracy looked like Ralph Byrd.
HannoX about 13 years ago
Is Chief Brandon Jimmy Durante’s long lost brother? He looks like the guy who should try passing for Beak Lawson.
LittleRedDress about 13 years ago
Buster Crabbe was blonde, not brown-haired. Another coloring error. Also, Dick Tracy IS Ralph Byrd!

Thanks for the Buster Crabbe – Flash Gordon reference. It’s good to know I’m not the only one who remembers the classic serials.
