Who was it here who called it, way back when Honey was brushing Mysta’s hair? I know somebody here suggested it might be a ploy to collect DNA samples.

This story arc just gets better and better, in my opinion.

That MM is as fake as Lady Gaga… My guess is, the second they met Honeymoon could tell that wasn’t how her Mom would have acted, seeing her after so long;MM was a child of the 60s and given to a lot of touchy-feely.

As I see it we have two options outside of her being the real deal or a clone: another moon person surgically altered to look like Moon Maid or a normal earth person altered to look like Moon Maid with her horns being part of some devices that mimic moon maid’s powers.

Well, I had doubts about whether Honeymoon was collecting DNA with the hair brush, but it turns out she was, so I stand corrected on that.

Like many of the readers, Honeymoon would like to think that MM is the real Mysta, but she has her doubts, as a good detective should have. It’s interesting that she says that her horns are real. I wonder what that can mean. It comes to mind that one possibility is that real moon person horns have been transplanted onto MM’s head. I don’t suppose we’ll find out till Tracy catches up with her. I can’t see that happening immediately, because I think we don’t yet have a major crime here.

Perhaps Mysta is a refugee from the Moon originally sent here to ‘blend in’ among the humans. Found and used by Dr. Sail for his own nefarious purposes.

What if…. and this is a BIG “what if”, she is a clone, but they have the original Mysta locked up, or captive somewhere. She will eventually escape and expose Dr. Sail’s plot. I am no scientist but could that be possible?

Hiya gang! Here’s another theory. Not sure if anyone else has suggested this. She’s neither a clonen or the real Mysta. She’s someone who’s been surgically altered through plastic surgery.

If I’m right, we still have the mystery of WHO she really is. She must be someone from the the Tracy comic strip’s past.

I’d also like to add, I freaking LOVE how passionate (even heated at times) the comments and theories and discussions are here. If this doesn’t prove how relevant and fantastic this version of Tracy is, I don’t know what can prove it. What a testament to Team Tracy!!

It is interesting that none questioned seeing the Asp and Punjab alive and well, as they supposedly died in an explosion. Their appearance was well done and welcomed by all. I suspect that there was a wee message involved as to the indestructibility of classic characters. It makes sense that Mysta’s horns would be scarred from the explosion. What wouldn’t make sense is a yearlong story of an imposter that leaves Mysta in her grave. I’m loving this excellent story and believe that when all is revealed we shall see that Mysta is as alive and genuine as the Asp and Punjab.

Some months back, about when Mike was contemplating aspects of this story, he confessed (on the Dick Tracy Yahoo Board) that he was suffering from ’ Writers Block ’ ! Note, he usually has his scripts some 5 t0 6 months ahead of the art and the publication date.

It’s possible that in the beginning, Mike contemplated having an impersonator in to act as MM. Possibly Notta Chin Chillar? (who has ‘appeared’ as he had promised - - but noticeable to date, has contributed little of substance to the storyline) ?

And much to every-ones surprise (including the Authors) the Moon Maid character has been unexpectedly popular, to a degree that may have caused a - change of mind on the character’s real identity ?A useful character to restore, but a presence that does create a disruptive problem for the Junior Tracy Family Unit. How could he keep the real Moon Maid around and not break up the family (?) A consideration, possibly sufficient to temporarily induce “Writers Block” ?

If he can somehow satisfactorily navigate around this ’ family problem ’ - the strip will have the most satisfactory outcome

Like others - I’m just “speculating”, while confessing that he still has us ALL guessing !. Time will tell !

I think Pequod77 said it best: It makes no sense to have a year long story about an imposter that leaves Mysta in the grave!

I like Dennis Sisneros comment, as well – if this Mysta is an imposter, that the real Mysta is still out there to be revealed before the end of the story.

Horns are scarred, and earlier, her face had to be hidden. Sounds like a blast survivor to me.

Sail is now revealed to be as big a fake as Ghote. I’m hoping this is just about the end of the clone/replicant/regenerant theories out there.

Opinion: Mysta’s original death may have been necessary because of too much science fiction back in the beginning. Note how Team Tracy is bringing Mysta back, but carefully trying to avoid too much science fiction as they do it:

    (1) Moon Colony is abandoned(2) Cloning is pretty much ruled out

Granted, having an alien is science fiction, as well as having her survive the blast. But Team Tracy seems very reluctant to go any further than this.

The only fakes and imposters at Mysta Manner are our pair of docs, the old Ghote and Sail!

MM/Mysta should have assault charges brought against her for what she did to Sparkle Plenty. I wonder what DT and Junior are going to do about that. I just cannot help but to think that MM/Mysta is going to be killed off (again) soon. I’m sure that in a day or two, we’ll be hearing from SP, and I do hope she is okay. If she figures out what has happened I bet she will be ticked off!

Temporary Suspension of Disbelief Department: It has been said that Dick Tracy is timeless. Nevertheless, it is at times like this that it’s sometimes very difficult to keep a story straight.

As someone said in response to one of my posts a few weeks ago, Dick Tracy seems to move forward and backward in time, conveniently communicating with characters who were thought to be long dead and gone. (A terrible paraphrase, I’m sure)

At the end of the day, we are left wondering, was Mysta’s alleged death 35 years ago, 35 months ago, or even 35 days ago? The only thing we know for sure is that there was time enough for Mysta to receive some kind of death certificate.

Likely, it wasn’t a case of “legally dead” after a lengthy period of Mysta having been a “missing person”; Mysta was never presumed missing – though, unrevealed at this time is whether there is a body in Mysta’s tomb – and if so, whose body is it?

On the other hand, we are still dealing with some inconsistent behavior on Mysta’s part – especially since she has committed a crime against Sparkle!

And currently, Sparkle is as missing as Dick Tracy was until this weekend!

This script is good, and the artwork is just as good! Gotta agree with margueritem about the utterly charming Honeymoon character, too. The DNA samples will prove useful IF there is a base from the original Mysta Tracy to which they may be compared, and if the possibly of identical DNA in a clone is considered and either accepted or rejected by comic strip science. “Scarred horns” are almost certainly a clue in some way, but it is not yet clear what they may mean. For example, hypothetically, the tough matter of the original Mysta’s horns might have been the only body parts to survive the car explosion and may be what a clone was grown from by S. Tim Sail and Zy Ghote, who may be frauds in some ways yet still have Mad Scientist abilities…. I do look forward to seeing how Team Tracy resolves this problematic resurrection story. It’s a really sticky wicket!

This must all be happening on the same day in comic strip time, because we have Junior on the job at HQ, and Tracy asking Honeymoon about her visit with MM, yet no one shows concern for Sparkle. That must mean that they don’t know about her plight as of yet.

I’m not any kind of expert on cloning and DNA matters, but I THINK that the hairs from the brush would only prove that this is NOT Mysta. What I mean is, if the DNA does not match (assuming they have a sample for comparison) then she is not real. But if the DNA does match, what would that mean? She could be real or she could be a clone, I think.

It is possible that the police or Diet Smith have records of the original MM’s DNA. Diet had extensive tests run on her at the time she first stowed away to Earth on a Space Coupe.

The DNA tests Tracy will run will determine whether or not this Mysta is the original or a Moon woman who has been altered. It will not prove or disprove the clone theory but every little clue helps.

Scarred horns? Makes me think I may be right – Mysta survived the blast, but had to go into “regeneration” mode, which took a long time due to the severe injuries. Her face was too badly damaged to completely heal.

The Jeep was a dog from another dimension (What? Sci-fi in Popeye?). He could appear and disappear at will, walk through walls, and determine if someone was telling the truth. He would indicate truth or falsehood by the position of his tail. His diet consisted of orchids.

Thimble Theatre (the official name of the Popeye strip) was one of my favorite comics. About 25 years ago, a company in Chicago acquired rights from King Features to produce new Popeye and Betty Boop comic books. For the Popeye title, they wanted someone who could draw in the Segar style. I applied for the job and got so far as drawing up a page as an “audition.” Unfortunately, the company went out of business before any comics from these titles were produced. The company did, however, publish several other titles and paperback compilations including reprints of Carl Barks’ Uncle Scrooge dailies in book form. A friend of mine won an award for the coloring of these dailies for the book. It has been a long time and for the life of me, I can’t remember the name of the company.

Just a quick note at Ray Toler and others – I’m not saying that Sail/Ghote aren’t “geniuses,” but they are still crooks. But I do want to say that any kind of “clone Mysta” or “Moon Maid Lite” (as others have called her) would be a total disaster, especially for Moon Maid fans.

Perhaps the reason Moon Maid foes want so badly for her to be a clone, replicant, or some other kind of regeneration, is that they realize, as does John Russell, that such a Moon Maid would be both disposable and would need to be disposed of in pretty short order.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but I think I recall that originally, John was a Moon Maid fan. His posts lately seem to repeat his feeling that Mysta is about to be killed off once again, and probably quickly.

Which is likely the fate of Mysta if she is anything but the “real deal.”

I honestly don’t see anything other than the “real deal” Mysta being anything to the strip other than an over-the-top villain. Being any kind of fake, including clones and regenerations, our new Mysta can be nothing better than a delusional interloper. Delusional because she thinks she is someone that she is not, and an interloper because she does not belong.

Other disasters for the strip would include the loss of relevance of DNA testing. While DNA testing might eliminate someone’s lineage from being implicated, a DNA positive would mean nothing now that there are people running around with other people’s DNA. I really don’t think Mike and Joe want to go there!

So much for this being a “quick note.” Count me as one who still wants this to be the real Mysta. But I am alarmed at the possibility that she may be a fake, or other kind of clone, and the terrible things that would do to the strip.

I thought all the childish Locher bashing ended a while ago. The gentleman is in his eighties, hasn’t done Dick Tracy for 2 years or so, and even just retired from editorial cartooning. Part of the Chicago Tribune story regarding his retirement was as follows:“Dick’s career as an editorial cartoonist began inexplicably in 1973 when he was offered the staff cartoonist position at the Chicago Tribune even though he had no experience in the job. (He had assisted on the comic strip Dick Tracy for many years with legendary cartoonist Chester Gould, who recommended him for the Tribune job.) Over the years Dick had more than 10,000 cartoons published (”That’s a whole lot of getting mad six times a week," he said); won a bunch of awards, including a Pulitzer in 1983; had a private lunch in the Oval Office with President Ronald Reagan; received two death threats; took over drawing and writing the Dick Tracy strip (he retired from that job in 2011); created the coveted John Locher Award for college cartoonists to honor the memory of his deceased son; and designed the Land of Lincoln Trophy, awarded to the winner of the Illinois-Northwestern college football game."I posted my own personal take here, about a year ago:“I must confess that, as much as I love this strip (and I’ve been reading it since the early sixties), I kind of lost track of it during the Max Allan Collins era (maybe around the time of the 1st appearance of Putty Puss), which I think is about the same time that it was dropped from the Detroit Free Press comics pages. There was no internet & I didn’t think to get a subscription to the Chicago Tribune, so I was Tracyless. But when I heard that this current team would be taking over the helm, I did indeed make an effort to find this strip on GoComics, and I enjoy it to this day. That being said, I want to say that I have diligently read each readers’ comment over the past year+, and I find myself compelled to say something about Dick Locher.Being curious (brought about by so many comments made about the gentleman’s tenure), I decided to use some of my spare time to read as much of his work as history would allow (10 years –or- more). Now, I will freely admit that some stories did seem to drag on, and while most Sunday strips seemed to be a re-cap of the week, Monday strips seemed sometimes to be a re-cap of Sunday. But, for all those years that this gentleman had control of the Dick Tracy comic strip, he never gave up. He kept it running with his own interpretation. He obviously had a love of the character. As I understand it, the gentleman went through his own real & personal losses. But, he never gave up on Tracy. My point is this: What if he HAD quit, just let this strip go & there was no one waiting in the wings at that time to take over. What are the odds that someone would have RE-STARTED Dick Tracy after an absence of a few years . I don’t think it could have been done. But the fact that this gentleman kept going, kept the concept alive until Mike & Joe were ready to take the reins should be applauded. So I say, Thank You, Mr. Locher, for you dedication, and for all you did that allows us to read this great strip today.”Give it up already. That horse is long dead, It doesn’t need to be beaten anymore.

If it was enough to actually rehabilitate the original, why wouldn’t they police have found her instead of Dr. Sail? When Sparkle left the recording studio, why didn’t her mother leave then, too? Where is Jewel? Surely someone will realize soon that Sparkle is missing.

THANK YOU Night-Gaunt49. I am one of those fans that HATED the last ten years of the Locher Years. He became Lazy or bored, or what ever people want to call it, but the strip suffered horribly. There is a time and point that Locher should have said “It’s time to let someone else take over”, in my opinion he was the one beating the dead horse. While I applaud him for some of his work, I can just say I am glad he gave up the strip. It was long overdue.
