I wonder who owns this barn. It could belong to the guy with the walrus moustache. Probably not, but anything can happen in this strip.
They didn’t make it all the way to the cabin. As I suspected, it was kind of slow going in that weather. My first thought was that someone might recognize the car, but then I realized that Sprocket is planning to drive it right inside the barn where it can’t be seen by passers-by. Seems like a good plan. I wonder if there are any animals in the barn and if they mind having a hyena in their midst.
Nicely drawn feet, but nonetheless she is a dog. A bad dog. This story has a bunch of holes and is nothing like the real world but it just keeps getting better.
A lot is at risk here. The Nitrates know nothing of who owns the barn they are breaking into (nor do we); it could be a mere cast “extra,” or it could be someone significant and/or dangerous. Further, they gave no idea of the weather forecast (they have not been listening to the radio in their tricked-put car)
3rd panel has a real country feel, just like “The Old Master” woulda dunnit !
How TRUE !
Refreshingly, out in the “countryside” ! With the pleasant change of ‘scenery’ and wider “visual” perspectives that brings !You get the eerie feeling as this tale unfolds, that Gould’s spirit is right there -quietly pushing the pen as Mike writes ! (?)
Were one were to do an (unkind?) comparison back to (say)- the Jumbler tale (Mar/April 2013), that seemed (exaggerating here ;-)- “visually” constricted, to 1 Block, an Apartment, an Office, a Bus and little else ’visually to ‘peak up’ interest ? Other than Crypto the cute little dog - and yes, a short term. ‘fascination’ in the #13 on his glasses (wearing off, after a day or two) Putting aside these attractions, it’s a bit ‘Hum Drum’, and less space for Staton to ‘expand’ his significant talent.
As you note, this activity harks back to ‘the way’ Chester Gould so often appeared to turn, in his stories.
Commentators called it the CHASE sequence, and seemingly — a natural or intrinsic part of most of Gould’s tales,.Trigger Doom, 88 Keyes, Measles, Crewy Lu and Shoulders. Those classic stories come easily to mind
Over on the DT Yahoo board Mike’s mentioned, that this is their first presentation of the traditional ‘chase’ sequence, albeit he said - a short one. But as we are seeing, it adds depth, and an enhanced ‘sense’ of things happening, ACTION helping to bring attention to the tale !
Let’s hope Mike feels pleased enough with the results to have it more often in the future ;-)

Don’t know if this was your reference, but “barn swallow” always takes me back to the Jimmy Stewart movie, MR. HOBBS TAKES A VACATION". Loved it!

Thanks for the tutorial, Gweedo- I was kind of wondering that myself!

Classic indeed. Looks like we could be leading up to an old fashion “gangsters in the barn/shoot-out” climax.

They get trapped by the snow and Lena becomes less lean on bro and sis.

This could have a Classic ending, or beginning….Maybe Batman and Dracula show up in the Batmobile to intervene..or some other kind of twist..

Thanks Gweed – I’ve always wondered that myself!

Not everyone drives. My mother, who was so high strung she made Olive Oyl seem sedate, never drove – and many pedestrians were grateful.

I wonder if the barn will be empty. And Lena will not be happy.

If women are good drivers, I’ve found, they’re as good as, or better than, many men.
